Cause of motor vehicle accidents not always apparent

Two individuals died in a multi-car accident in the early morning hours of a busy New Jersey highway on a Friday in December. Motor vehicle accidents involving fatalities are especially devastating during the holiday season. The collision in Middlesex County became a fiery scene, engulfing the cars that were involved in flames and leaving six other people injured.

There were massive traffic delays and highway closures near the scene while emergency crews battled the flames and worked to rescue those involved. Authorities reported that six injured parties were transported to local hospitals. The injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The cause of the accident is still undetermined, although a video report accompanying a news report suggested it was a chain reaction crash. The law requires motorists to maintain a safe driving distance from vehicles in front of them. These types of collisions are difficult to investigate, and in some circumstances, more than one party may be deemed to have been at fault.

When New Jersey motor vehicle accidents result in fatalities, the surviving families of the deceased victims may have grounds to pursue wrongful death claims in civil court. Similarly, those seriously injured may have grounds to file personal injury lawsuits. In both instances, it would be necessary to prove that another party was negligent in a manner that caused or materially contributed to the accident. A lawyer experienced in handling these types of claims for monetary damages can help assess the underlying circumstances, determine the at-fault party or parties, document the damages incurred and help navigate the civil court system in pursuit of justice.
