Medical malpractice potential cause of veteran's death

Some elderly people often have complex medical needs that can only be addressed by skilled health care providers. As a result, many families in New Jersey make the difficult decision to place their loved ones in nursing homes. Unfortunately, some find that patients in these facilities are sometimes victims of medical malpractice.

Such appears to be the case following the 2014 death of an 89-year-old veteran who died while in the care of a nursing home in another state. Footage from a hidden camera is said to have shown the man yelling for help several times before becoming unconscious. Even when nurses responded and found him unresponsive, they waited an hour to call 911.

A nurse involved in the man's care claims that CPR was administered immediately and was not stopped until emergency responders arrived. However, the footage shows nurses stopping and starting compressions. Additionally, the nurses can be heard laughing when they experienced difficulties with the man's oxygen machine. As a result of the incident, two nurses were fired approximately a year later, but their nursing license was not revoked until over three years later.

A statement from representatives of the nursing home claims that they are saddened by the events involving the man's death, but they also claim that the facility is under new management and is making efforts to improve the care that patients receive there. Unfortunately, even one incident of medical malpractice is too many, and it often -- as seen in this case -- has devastating consequences. To help prevent others from suffering similarly, families in New Jersey who have experienced similar treatment turn to litigation.
