Hidden cameras in nursing home capture medical malpractice

For many in New Jersey, the decision to place a loved one in a long term care facility is a difficult one to make, especially when the patient is nonverbal and unable to communicate about the care he or she receives. Desperate to ensure the safety of their family members, families often choose to mount hidden surveillance cameras to record what happens when they cannot be present. Many families in other states have allegedly discovered treatment that they consider to be medical malpractice.

For example, a concerned daughter in another state claims she mounted a camera in her 94-year-old father's room who is suffering from dementia. Footage allegedly shows a nursing assistant trying to force the man off his bed before sending him falling into a chair, where he hit his head. Another clip shows a nursing assistant pouring mouthwash on his body. A representative for the family claims that the alcohol content in the mouthwash may have contributed to the development of the bedsores that led to the man's death.

Hidden footage in other facilities has also revealed what appears to be horrific acts at nursing home facilities. One video shows an employee sleeping through alarms indicating that a patient is in distress. Another apparently shows a worker removing a patient's breathing tube and failing to respond despite alarms sounding.

Laws regarding the use of hidden surveillance cameras vary according to state. Unfortunately, even with proof of medical malpractice, many people in New Jersey may be unaware how to best pursue justice. However, there are professionals with experience with these types of cases who can help victims and their families explore their legal options.
