Study finds daylight savings leads to increase in car accidents

There are many pros and cons to daylight savings. For some, the upcoming hour gained during fall translates to an extra hour of sleep. For others, it just means getting up even earlier with the kids.

In addition to impacting your sleeping schedule, a recent study out of the United Kingdom notes that the change also increases your risk of getting into an auto wreck.

How does daylight savings translate to an increased risk of car accidents? If you step back and look at it logically, the findings make sense. The clocks all move back an hour. The sun sets earlier. That evening commute back home is now more likely to occur in the dark.

This specific part of the day, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. experienced the greatest increase in risk, according to the study. The risk of a car crash jumped during this time period by 30 percent.

What can be done to reduce this risk? Although we are unlikely to do away with daylight savings, we can take basic precautions to reduce the risk of an accident. Make sure your headlights are on so that your vehicle is visible to others, avoid distractions like texting or browsing social media sites on your smartphone and focus on the road.

What if you are involved in a car crash? Unfortunately, even when these precautions are taken accidents can happen. Those that are the victims of another's negligent or reckless driving can hold the other driver liable for his or her actions through a personal injury lawsuit. This lawsuit is designed to both hold the guilty party accountable while also translating to monetary awards for the victims to help cover the costs associated with the accident.

Contact an experienced car accident attorney if you believe your accident qualifies. This legal professional will review your case and help you determine the best course of action.
