Too many car accidents involve people who should not be driving

Some of the people traveling New Jersey's roadways should not even be behind the wheel. There are any number of reasons why an individual should not be driving such as impairment and/or medical conditions that make it dangerous to operate a motor vehicle. These individuals increase the risk of car accidents that could cause serious injury or death.

On a recent Wednesday morning at about 7:15 a.m., it was rush hour on Route 3. At that time, traffic came to a standstill after a head-on collision occurred in the westbound lanes of the highway on a bridge. Preliminary reports indicate that an 84-year-old woman was traveling eastbound in the opposing lanes of travel. At least one motorist attempted to get the woman's attention and got close enough to comment that she had a "blank" look on her face.

Eventually, the New Jersey woman's luck ran out, and the car she was driving slammed head-on into another vehicle. Her family members did not even know that she had left her home, which was approximately two hours from where the crash occurred. They suspect that she might be suffering from Alzheimer's. At last report, she required extensive surgery for her injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was last listed as being in stable condition and was expected to be released from the hospital.

Even if he was released from the hospital, that 59-year-old man could be facing a lengthy recovery. Undoubtedly, he is incurring significant medical bills, along with other expenses and damages associated with his injuries. He retains the right to file a personal injury claim seeking restitution for monetary damages. If he successfully establishes that his injuries were due to the negligence of the other driver, he could receive an award of damages to help defray the financial losses typically associated with car accidents.
