New Jersey Transit bus accidents can cause serious injuries

Many New Jersey residents use the state's transit system every day to get where they need to go. Most days, it is a safe way to travel, but bus accidents do occur. Recently, a crash between two buses caused serious injuries and one death.

The preliminary investigation reveals that as the two buses approached the intersection where the accident occurred, one of them failed to stop for a red traffic light. Only the driver occupied one bus. The driver and 17 passengers occupied the other.

One of the drivers was a 70-year-old man who had worked for New Jersey Transit for approximately 27 years. He suffered critical injuries in the crash to which he succumbed. The other driver -- who has been with the New Jersey Transit for around 35 years -- survived and was recently released from the hospital. The surviving driver and the family of the deceased driver will most likely receive workers' compensation benefits.

The passengers could find it difficult to recover both physically and financially from the crash. The 17 passengers suffered a variety of injuries. An unspecified number of them were last reported as being hospitalized in critical condition. The investigation into the accident is being conducted by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office. Since the investigation has not yet been completed, no information was provided regarding which driver was responsible for the crash.

The injured passengers could use the details of the official investigation to help establish negligence in personal injury claims against the responsible driver -- or his estate if it was the deceased driver. Furthermore, New Jersey Transit could also be named since it was its buses that were involved, along with its drivers. Any restitution received by each passenger could help with medical bills and other damages that often arise in bus accidents.
