Motorcycle vs. car accidents can be deadly for riders

Pedestrians, bicycle riders and motorcyclists are often considered to be the most vulnerable on the roadways. They do not enjoy the same protections as those in passenger cars and larger vehicles in car accidents, which means their injuries will most likely be more serious and could even be fatal. New Jersey drivers always need to be vigilant on the roadways, but they might need to take extra care when around motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

Recently, an 86-year-old driver failed to pay close enough attention and ran into a motorcycle. Police report that officers responded to the accident, which occurred on U.S. Highway Route 206 at approximately 4:15 p.m. on a recent Sunday. The driver of the passenger car was traveling southbound on the highway at the time.

The 52-year-old driver of the motorcycle and his 12-year-old passenger both suffered injuries serious enough to require being airlifted from the scene. Unfortunately, the man's injuries were too severe, and he succumbed to them at the hospital. At last report, the passenger remained hospitalized and was being treated. The crash remains under investigation and authorities are asking for anyone with information to contact them.

Regardless of what happens with the official investigation, the family of the deceased man and that of the 12-year-old passenger retain the right to file civil actions in a New Jersey civil court. If the evidence provided to the court proves that the other driver was negligent, it could consider an award of damages often ordered in cases involving car accidents. Any restitution received could help with the unexpected financial losses that accompany tragedies such as this one.
