Car accidents are far too common during prom season

As teenagers here in New Jersey -- and elsewhere across the country -- attend their junior and senior proms, many of them will be driving. Sadly, car accidents are far too common during prom season. Some of them are serious and/or fatal, such as one that took place on a recent Saturday morning after a prom the night before that was attended by at least three of the vehicle's four occupants.

Preliminary reports regarding the crash indicate that it was at about 3:45 a.m. when the driver, a 17-year-old girl, lost control of the vehicle she was driving on Route 49. She was attempting to negotiate a curve. When she failed, the vehicle flew across the roadway. It went through the oncoming lane of travel and continued off the roadway before crashing into a tree.

The driver and one of the passengers, a 15-year-old girl, suffered fatal injuries. Another passenger, a 16-year-old girl who survived the crash, was last reported as being in critical condition. The final passenger, a 17-year-old girl, also survived, and the last report regarding her condition was that she was stable.

As is the case with car accidents involving children, their lives are forever changed even before they had a chance to begin. Furthermore, each family is undoubtedly incurring expenses that might be difficult to pay -- especially since they are unexpected. The families of the victims retain the right to file civil actions in a New Jersey court to seek restitution for their financial losses in the aftermath of a tragedy that will continue to touch their lives in the future.
