Familiy loses 2 members due to another driver's negligence

Many grandparents look forward to holidays since they will be able to spend time with their grandchildren. They relish the chance to see how the youngest generation of the family has grown and participate in holiday activities with them. That is what one set of New Jersey grandparents was doing shortly before a tragic accident occurred. Due to a driver's negligence, it would be the last time the grandchildren would attend an event with their grandparents.

The grandparents, the father and two children had left an Easter egg hunt and were heading north on Route 523. They had no way of knowing that an allegedly drunk driver occupied one of the vehicles heading toward them. As the distance between the two vehicles closed, the southbound vehicle crossed over into the northbound lane and slammed head-on into the family's car.

The two children, a 5-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl, both survived the accident. Due to the nature of her injuries, the girl had to be flown to a hospital in New Brunswick. The boy was taken to Morristown Medical Center for treatment and was later released. The children's 43-year-old father managed to walk away from the crash with only minor injuries. The children's grandparents, however, did not survive.

The 23-year-old man believed to be responsible for the accident is facing numerous criminal charges. If New Jersey prosecutors secure convictions for any counts related to the deaths and injuries suffered by this family, they could be offered as evidence of his negligence in any related civil actions filed in the aftermath of this tragedy. Successfully proving that the driver was at fault could result in an award of damages to help with the financial losses sustained by the family.
