It can take months for charges to be filed re car accidents

On July 8, 2015, this blog reported an accident on New Jersey's Route 73 in which a child died ("Many multiple car accidents are caused by one driver's error"). The accident occurred on June 29, 2015. As is the case in many other car accidents, charges were only recently filed against the driver believed to be responsible for that crash.

Reports then and now reveal that the pickup truck driven by a 19-year-old man was traveling north on Route 73 at approximately 6:30 a.m. on the day of the crash. The pickup sideswiped another northbound vehicle driven by a 60-year-old man. The truck then slammed into a Mini Cooper. A fourth passenger vehicle was also struck.

The 64-year-old man in the Mini Cooper had to be extricated by emergency personnel before he could be taken to an area hospital. The fourth vehicle was occupied by three individuals, one of them a child. That child was flown to an area hospital, but her injuries were too severe, and she did not survive. The two adults in that vehicle, the 19-year-old driver and his 28-year-old passenger suffered injuries, but survived.

After months of investigation by New Jersey officials, the pickup truck driver -- who is from Pennsylvania -- has been criminally charged in connection with the crash. If they have not already done so, the victims -- and the family of the deceased child -- retain the right to file civil actions against the driver as well. Since there were multiple vehicles involved in this accident, other drivers might also be joined in those actions. Successfully proving negligence on the part of one or more defendants could lead to awards of damages often seen in car accidents.
