Lane closures sometimes lead to deadly car accidents

Whether it's for construction or some other purpose, officials will close portions of the lanes on the New Jersey Turnpike from time to time. Drivers are warned of most of these closures in advance so that they can merge into another other lane of travel. Some drivers, however, fail to pay attention to those warnings, which can lead to deadly car accidents.

Recently, the left lane of the southbound side of the New Jersey Turnpike was closed near mile marker 12.6. A vehicle driven by a 46-year-old man was stopped in that lane at approximately 5:30 p.m. A second car occupied by three men stopped behind the first vehicle. A third vehicle driven by a 24-year-old failed to stop and slammed into the back of the second vehicle, which was forced into the back of the first vehicle.

The two passengers in that second vehicle did not survive the crash. All three drivers suffered unknown injuries that were only described as not life-threatening. They were transported for treatment, and no further information regarding their conditions was reported. At last report, charges have not been filed because the investigation was still in progress.

Meanwhile, the families of the deceased passengers and anyone seriously injured may file civil actions against the party or parties deemed responsible. If negligence is established as required in cases involving car accidents, the court may consider awarding damages to the victims and their families. Any restitution received could help with the damages that are often incurred after serious accidents.
