Car accidents occur more often on certain New Jersey highways

Accidents happen on nearly every highway in New Jersey, but some of them are worse than others. A recent study rated the state's highways. Several factors were considered in order to determine which roadways had more car accidents.

Volume of traffic, length of the roadway and the number of crashes, among others, were used in order to determine which highways were more prone to accidents. For instance, the way that a highway is designed has an impact on crash statistics. A divided highway with intersection controls will be safer than two-lane, undivided highways. Using these criteria, a 1.5 mile highway, Route 156, has a higher instance of accidents than Routes 1 and Route 9.

According to statistics gathered by the New Jersey Department of Transportation, Route 156 has an average of slightly more that 14 crashes per million miles traveled on it during 2014. Route 1's number of crashes per million was 3.79, and there were 3.56 crashes per million on Route 9 during the same year. The formula holds true with regard to several other smaller highways throughout the state, including some that serve as connections between larger ones, including the New Jersey Turnpike.

These statistics represent real people whose lives may have been altered forever. Whether victims in these car accidents suffered serious injuries, or lost their lives, restitution may be available to them (or their families, as applicable) through the presentation of a personal injury or wrongful death claim in civil court. The costs associated with accidents can be high, and proving that a serious injury or death was caused or contributed to by another party could result in a judgment for monetary damages that could help with the inevitable financial losses accompanying these tragedies.
