A variety of errors can be considered medical malpractice

When New Jersey residents require medical attention, they expect those attending to them at doctors' offices, clinics or hospitals to meet certain standards of care. Patients rely on doctors to make the correct diagnoses and prescribe appropriate courses of treatment. They expect nurses and other medical professionals to perform their duties and follow doctors' orders as well. Anything less could be considered medical malpractice.

Nearly everyone has heard horror stories of surgical errors in which foreign objects have been left inside patients, in which arteries or other vital organs were nicked or in which the surgeon operated on the wrong body part. Any of these mistakes during surgery could cause serious health consequences or death. The same can be said for post-surgical errors leading to excessive bleeding or infections.

Diagnostic mistakes can delay treatments needed for life-threatening conditions. For example, an early diagnosis of certain types of cancer dramatically increases the probability that treatment will be successful. A delay due to a failure to conduct the appropriate diagnostic tests could be tantamount to a death sentence for some patients. Even if a diagnosis is made in a timely manner, the wrong treatment could have adverse effects.

If you suspect that a medical professional was careless or negligent in your care or the care of a family member, filing a medical malpractice claim may be appropriate. Seeking the advice and assistance of an attorney who understands the complexities of these cases is essential in proving that you or your family member's care was not up to current medical standards. If a New Jersey Court determines that negligence occurred, an award of damages could be ordered.
