Drunken overconfidence can lead to car accidents

For some people, an inflated sense of confidence and invincibility seems to be a side effect of consuming alcohol. When combined with driving, this drunken overconfidence could easily lead to serious car accidents. New Jersey State Police believe this may have been the case in a recent crash on Route 80 East.

Troopers with the New Jersey State Police first received reports that an accident occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. on a recent Sunday morning. At the scene, witnesses told troopers that the vehicle appeared to be traveling at speeds up to 100 mph before the crash. The preliminary investigation indicates that the driver lost control of the vehicle at some point, which sent it careening off the highway and ultimately into the woods.

The vehicle carried two passengers, both 22 years of age. Reports indicate that they both suffered injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening, but were severe nonetheless. They were transported to an area hospital for treatment. No information was given regarding whether the driver suffered any injuries, but he is suspected of being impaired at the time of the accident.

The driver faces numerous charges as the official investigation continues. Meanwhile, the injured passengers could face a long and difficult recovery. Monetary damages such as lost wages and medical expenses can add up quickly under these circumstances. As is the case with other car accidents, the victims retain the right to file personal injury claims against the driver deemed responsible for their injuries. Successfully establishing negligence to the court could result in an award of damages that could help defray their financial losses.
