Number of fatal car accidents in New Jersey increases by 1

Each year, New Jersey officials calculate the total number of accidents that occur around the state. Further analysis of the car accidents tabulates certain factors such as crashes involving fatalities, speed and impairment, among other things. Sometimes, a wreck will fit into several categories, which could be the case with a recent fatal accident that took place on Route 31 near Route 518.

Both vehicles involved in the accident were traveling on Route 31, but in opposite directions. From the information currently available, it appears that the crash occurred in the northbound lane, which suggests that the southbound vehicle may have veered into the opposing lane of traffic and directly into the path of the other vehicle. The southbound vehicle came to rest in the middle of the road, and the impact propelled the other vehicle off the road.

Emergency responders freed the 21-year-old driver of the southbound vehicle before transporting him to an area hospital with unknown injuries. The passenger in the front seat died in the crash, but the back seat passenger survived long enough to be taken to the hospital. Sadly, he passed away as well.

The driver and passenger in the front seat of the other vehicle both survived the crash and were transported by air to hospitals. No word on the condition of the driver was available, but at last report, the passenger was listed as being in fair condition. The investigation into this tragedy is ongoing, and no word of whether charges are being contemplated was reported.

The families of the deceased victims and the surviving victims do not have to wait to see whether criminal charges will be filed in order to file civil suits in New Jersey against the person or persons who appear to have negligently caused or contributed to this accident. Ultimately, the accident report could prove useful in establishing negligence in civil court. A successfully litigated claim could result in an award of damages often seen in the aftermath of fatal car accidents.
