Kraft macaroni and cheese joins list of dangerous products

On March 17, Kraft Foods announced the recall of approximately 6.5 million boxes of its original macaroni and cheese product, which were distributed across the country -- most likely including many here in New Jersey. However, at last report, the Food and Drug Administration had not yet classified the recall. The FDA is responsible for assigning a consumer risk factor to dangerous products.

The most serious classification is a Class I recall, which means that there is a threat of serious illness or death from exposure or use of a product. Class II is for products from which a consumer can contract an illness or injury, but he or she will ordinarily recover. The lowest level of risk is from a Class III recall because it is not expected to cause any adverse health issues.

As for this recall, fragments of metal were discovered in the popular product. So far, eight consumers reported finding metal in a box of macaroni and cheese, but the company says it is unaware of any injuries. The recalled boxes bear "best when used by" dates ranging between Sept. 15, 2015 and Oct. 11, 2015. The boxes also have the code "C2" on them. Kraft believes this will be categorized as a Class II recall, but the final decision rests with the FDA.

Even a temporary and/or recoverable illness or injury can cause a consumer to incur damages. Each year, consumers become ill from or are injured by dangerous products. If a New Jersey resident discovers that a product caused his or her illness or injury, he or she may file a products liability claim against the party or parties deemed responsible for the defective or dangerous product.
