Car accidents can result in permanent injury and financial loss

Almost no one in New Jersey gets into a car and expects his or her life to be torn apart by an accident. However, car accidents do happen, and they can leave an individual -- and his or her family -- forever changed by permanent injury and financial loss. Nothing may undo the physical and psychological damage done, but successfully handled civil lawsuits may be able to stem the flow of financial loss.

One New Jersey woman who suffered permanent damage to her neck and spine looked to the courts for relief when the at-fault party's insurance company offered her a mere $50,000. Recently, a jury awarded her $2.75 million for her injuries. Another $750,000 was awarded to her husband in an attempt to make up for the losses he sustained due to his wife's injuries.

The 27-year-old woman could not have known what would take place on Sept. 16, 2010. As she drove, another vehicle veered into her path and slammed into her vehicle head-on. While she survived the crash, but life as she knew it would never be the same. Of course, no amount of money will restore her physically, but it can give her and her husband some peace and closure.

When people are hurt due to the negligence of another, they retain the right to file personal injury claims in order to seek help with the financial impact that inevitably follows serious car accidents. Permanent injuries can take away a person's livelihood, require a significant amount of medical care and change how they interact with family and others for the rest of his or her life. State law allows certain damages to be awarded to help with these challenges when negligence has been established by appropriate proof. No one should take an offer of settlement without first seeking the advice and assistance of someone who can properly review his or her case to determine whether it is a fair offer.
