Truck accidents often leave injuries in their aftermath

When a truck driver loses control of his or her vehicle, it can have devastating consequences -- especially for those in or near the vehicle. Truck accidents involving 18-wheelers or other big rigs cause numerous people to suffer serious injuries or even death due to their sheer size and weight. Even a New Jersey transit bus may provide enough protection in the event of an accident involving a tractor-trailer.

Several people found this out the hard way recently in a crash involving three tractor-trailers and a transit bus on the New Jersey Turnpike. An 18-wheeler apparently attempted to move into the left-center lane from the right-center lane. In doing so, the driver lost control of the tractor-trailer and slammed into another semi-truck. This caused a chain reaction that ultimately led to a collision with between a bus -- which was in the HOV lane -- and one of three tractor-trailers involved in the wreck.

Of the 61 passengers aboard the bus, 10 suffered mild to moderate injuries. They were taken to University Hospital in Newark, which is the nearest trauma center to where the accident took place. Two other passengers suffered injuries described as life-threatening, and they were rushed to the same hospital. University Hospital did not provide any information on their current conditions except to say that they should recover. Reportedly, the truck drivers were not injured.

The accident victims may choose to exercise their right to file personal injury claims in connection with the crash. The costs associated with medical care can add up quickly, and the longer a victim is out of work, the more income he or she could lose. These damages and others typically seen in truck accidents could be awarded to the victims if they are each able to establish negligence on the part of one or more parties to the collision, likely including the employer of any truck driver deemed to have negligently caused or materially contributed to the crash.
