New Jersey hit-and-run car accidents can be difficult to solve

Some New Jersey families are forced to wait for answers when they lose a loved one in an accident. Hit-and-run car accidents can be a challenge for law enforcement officials -- especially if there are no witnesses. Fortunately, many of these cases are solved, and families can finally receive some closure.

For example, on a recent Friday afternoon, a 36-year-old man was crossing the street when a vehicle struck him. As is the case in far too many pedestrian vs. car accidents, he did not survive the injuries he suffered. The person responsible failed to remain at the scene. The victim's family may never know if he could have survived had the driver stayed to render aid and call 911.

Police began searching for the car and its driver, and they even placed an information board at the scene in the hopes that someone would contact them. An individual saw the board and contacted police. It was not until a few days later that a 42-year-old man suspected of being responsible for the accident was located and charged with fleeing the scene of an accident involving a fatality. The vehicle believed to be the one that hit the victim was also located and is now considered evidence.

In some hit-and-run car accidents, the driver deemed at fault is not directly charged with the death of the victim. However, that does not mean that the family is not able to file a wrongful death claim against the driver. Proving negligence to a New Jersey court could result in an award of damages, which may defray any monetary losses incurred by the family and give them a sense of justice.
