Evidence in car accidents comes from numerous sources

During the investigation of an accident, law enforcement officials in New Jersey look at as many sources as possible to determine what happened. Evidence regarding car accidents can come from the crash scene itself, witnesses and even video footage. A piece of video footage from a driver's dash camera could provide police with a clue to a recent crash that killed a 19-year-old man.

The man was traveling north on Route 9 at about 11 p.m. when his dash cam captured a southbound vehicle out of control. The vehicle slammed into the concrete dividing the north and southbound lanes of the highway. Debris exploded across the highway.

During the crash, the front seat passenger was ejected onto the roadway. The victim succumbed to the injuries he suffered at the scene. It was not reported what injuries, if any, the 20-year-old driver suffered. The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office reports that he was charged with vehicular homicide.

The man, a Brooklyn resident, first offered the footage he captured to the prosecutor's office, but when the authorities did not immediately respond, he gave it to a New Jersey news outlet. After that, authorities also requested the video. The authorities say that the investigation is ongoing.

In the meantime, a family is surely grieving for the loss of their loved one. They retain the right to file a wrongful death claim against the driver deemed responsible for his death. If the family prevails in proving negligence, the court may award monetary damages to the family as financial restitution for those documented losses commonly associated with fatal car accidents.
