2 New Jersey teens added to statistics re fatal car accidents

A fatal motor vehicle accident is always tragic. When children or teenagers who have just barely begun their lives are killed in car accidents, it seems the sorrow is even deeper. An entire community is feeling the recent loss of two New Jersey teenagers.

The boys were at a gym, lifting weights in preparation for the high school football season. Two friends showed up to take them for a ride in a new car recently given to one of the friends as a birthday present. Police report that the vehicle was speeding when the driver lost control on a turn. The vehicle careened off the right side of the road, plowed through a street sign and slammed into a tree.

The two teens -- who were both sitting in the back seat -- suffered fatal injuries and passed away at the scene. The other passenger and the driver were transported to a local hospital. At last report, one of them was released by the hospital. Police made no indication as to whether any charges are being considered in connection with the crash.

As the family, friends and fellow students of the two high school football players mourn their deaths, it is likely that the families are incurring significant debt. Both families retain the right to file wrongful death claims seeking damages that are recognized under New Jersey laws with regard to car accidents caused by the negligent acts of others. If the families prevail in proving that the negligence of the driver led to the death of these two boys, the court may consider an award of damages that could alleviate the financial burden brought about by the loss.
