Emergency vehicles become involved in car accidents too

Emergency responders put their lives on the line every day to help the people in the New Jersey communities where they live. Seeing emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire trucks at the scenes of car accidents is normal, and the injured are grateful to them for their help. Every so often, however, emergency personnel never arrive at a scene to which they are called because they were involved in an accident along the way.

Authorities say this was the case in a recent crash involving an ambulance. The ambulance was on its way to an accident when it was broadsided. The impact to the rear of the ambulance was so hard that it sent the vehicle into a spin. The ambulance finally came to rest after it tipped over onto a car parked on the side of the road.

A vehicle that was not involved in the initial collision was stopped at the traffic light of the intersection where the crash occurred. It was struck as well. Reports indicate that five people suffered injuries that were initially characterized as non-life threatening. All five, including the two EMTs in the ambulance, were taken to an area hospital for treatment. The updated conditions of those five people were not reported.

The two EMTs may be eligible for workers' compensation benefits, but they also may choose to file personal injury claims, along with the other two injured victims. If negligence on the part of the driver who broadsided the ambulance can be established to the satisfaction of a New Jersey civil court, an award of damages may be considered. Damages ordinarily recognized by courts in car accidents once liability is established typically include medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering.
