Car accidents: New Jersey teen on way to school bus -- hit by car

During the school year, parents send their children off to school, fully expecting them to return home safe and uninjured at the end of the day. Sadly, some children are involved in car accidents on their way to or from school. Most New Jersey parents would agree that nothing elicits as much panic for them as the news that their child was in an accident.

This is the news given to the parents of a New Jersey teen that was struck by a car as the boy was on his way to the school bus on Jan. 21. Police suspect the 80-year-old man driving the car that hit him ignored the warning lights and stop sign on the bus. They suggest that the driver veered around the bus, hitting the student. The driver failed to stop for about 50 feet after striking the student. All the while, the teen was carried along with the car.

The victim was taken to an area hospital with head injuries. At the time of this report, his condition was listed as critical but stable. No further information on the identity of the driver was reported. Further, nothing was reported regarding what criminal charges, if any, will be filed against the driver in connection with this incident.

The full extent of any permanent damage suffered by the victim may not be known for some time. As he struggles to recover, his family will undoubtedly incur a significant amount of medical costs and other expenses associated with his hospitalization and rehabilitation. As is the case in similar car accidents, his parents retain the right to file a personal injury claim against the driver in an attempt to recover the financial damages they have sustained, as well as those they will likely sustain in the future.
