Wrongful death of New Jersey temp worker investigated

Picking up extra work is a tried and true way to stretch a tight holiday budget. Many New Jersey companies rely on temporary workers to augment their usual workforce when demand for their products increases seasonally. These temp workers may not be officially on the payroll, but they still deserve safe working conditions. Unfortunately, accidents may happen and wrongful death can still occur.

The recent death of a temporary worker who was employed at a New Jersey online retailer's fulfillment center is being investigated by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration. Officials with OSHA say they want to ensure working conditions at the facility are safe for its employees. Company officials say they also want answers about what led to the tragic accident so they can prevent something similar happening to someone else.

The worker who died was trapped between equipment and then squashed before being released. The ensuing investigation centers on whether Amazon attempted to avoid meeting safety requirements by using temporary staffing. In addition to the local investigation, OSHA is also mounting a national initiative that looks at the safety of temporary worker's environment.

Amazon has had several complaints that work at fulfillment centers is difficult and requires undue stamina to complete the average workday. The company's past history, however, tells a different story. According to Amazon officials, there is less danger for an employee working at one of their fulfillment centers then there would be if that same employee worked at a department store.

OSHA must release any relevant information they find within the next six months. In the meantime, the family of the person who died may want to consider filing a wrongful death lawsuit. Understanding all their options could give them a fresh perspective in the midst of their grief and show them the best way to move forward.
