Bicycle riders are incredibly vulnerable in car accidents

Bicycle riding is a great way to get around and stay healthy. The down side is that, when car accidents occur that involve bike riders, they are incredibly vulnerable to serious or fatal injuries. If a New Jersey bicyclist manages to survive a crash, he or she could suffer debilitating and lifelong injuries.

No one knows yet whether a 62-year-old man and his 57-year-old wife will fully recover from the injuries they suffered in an accident that took place on a recent Wednesday afternoon at around 2 p.m. The couple was riding on the shoulder when a car struck them. The woman suffered more serious injuries than her husband did because she was thrown into the windshield on the driver's side.

The New Jersey man's injuries might be considered serious, but he was last reported as being in stable condition. On the other hand, his wife was last known to be in critical condition. The driver remained at the scene after the crash. Police took the 41-year-old driver into custody, and he faces charges of possession of a controlled dangerous substance and two counts of assault by auto.

In addition to any criminal charges, the driver, who is also from New Jersey, could face personal injury claims from the victims. Anyone who has ever been hospitalized knows how expensive medical care can be even with health insurance. The couple might be able to recoup their financial losses if the negligence of the driver is successfully established through the appropriate evidence. In addition to their actual monetary losses, they could also request other damages allowed by law in connection with car accidents.
