Some car accidents do not involve other vehicles

When many New Jersey residents hear about a car wreck, they often assume that it took place on a roadway or possibly even in a parking lot. What many people do not expect is to hear that a vehicle crashed into a building or some other inanimate structure. The fact is, many car accidents defy logic and leave people seriously or fatally injured.

For example, a recent accident at a Best Western here in New Jersey could have law enforcement officials shaking their heads. It was around 3:30 a.m. when police in the city where the hotel is began receiving calls regarding the crash. Upon arrival, it was discovered that a vehicle had slammed into the island barrier in front of the hotel's entrance.

When Fort Lee police arrived at the scene, they discovered that the vehicle sustained heavy damage to its front end. In addition, all five occupants of the vehicle suffered injuries and were transported to the hospital. At last report, two of them remained hospitalized in critical condition.

The 17-year-old driver did not have a valid license. He is facing criminal charges in connection with the injuries caused to the passengers. Officials report that he could face additional charges at the completion of the investigation.

Criminal charges are not the only court actions the driver could face. Since he is a minor, his family and the owner of the vehicle could be served with personal injury claims from the victims and/or their families. The evidence presented to a civil court will need to establish that the driver was negligent and show how any other parties are legally responsible for the driver's actions. If successful, damages could be awarded to help with the financial losses that these types of car accidents tend to create.
