Understanding the reasons behind car accidents can take time

After the immediate needs of the victims are taken care of, an investigation into the crash can begin in earnest. Understanding the reasons behind car accidents can take time. This is often why road closures can last for hours and the final reports are not issued for days, weeks or even months.

A recent accident shut down a stretch of Route 9 here in New Jersey for over three-and-a-half hours while officers conducted the onsite investigation. Preliminary reports indicate that a southbound SUV careened into the northbound lanes and slammed into a car. The 45-year-old driver of the SUV and the 37-year-old driver of the car both suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene.

Four people occupied the northbound car. One of the passengers, a 62-year-old man, also died as a result of the injuries he suffered in the crash. Another passenger, an 86-year-old woman, was last reported as being in critical condition. The third passenger, a 62-year-old woman, was in serious condition at last report. Both survivors were taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, which is located in New Brunswick.

The survivors will undoubtedly incur a significant amount of medical expenses and other damages during their recoveries. In addition, the families of the deceased victims are incurring monetary losses associated with the deaths of their loved ones. Civil actions may be filed against the estate of the deceased SUV driver in an attempt to recover damages similar to those awarded in cases involving car accidents. If the evidence establishes that driver's negligence, a New Jersey court could order damages to be awarded that could help with those financial burdens.
