Many parents fear school bus accidents will injure their children

When most parents put their children onto a school bus, they hope that nothing will happen to them and that they will get home safely at the end of the school day. School bus accidents can send parents into a panic wondering if their children were injured. Recently, the families of four New Jersey children received the phone call that no parent wants to get.

Fortunately, all four children survived the accident. However, the three adults involved suffered a variety of injuries, including one person whose injuries were fatal. At around 7:42 a.m., a westbound vehicle drifted into the eastbound lane directly into the path of a school bus. The two vehicles collided, sending the bus off the roadway where it rolled onto its side.

The westbound vehicle sustained massive damage, and the 43-year-old driver died at the scene. An 82-year-old woman serving as an aide on the bus suffered severe injuries. At last report, her injuries were critical, but she is stable. The bus driver and the four children were all sent to a different hospital where they received treatments for unidentified injuries and have since been released.

The school that the children attended sent someone to be with the children until their parents arrived. The extent of the children's or the bus driver's injuries were not reported. The bus aide -- and possibly any of the other injured parties -- retains the right to file personal injury claims. If it is proved that negligence caused or contributed to the injuries suffered, compensation for damages often seen in bus accidents could be awarded by a New Jersey court.
