Far too many young people in New Jersey die in car accidents

New Jersey's young adults have the rest of their lives ahead of them. Unfortunately, too many of them lose their lives in car accidents before those lives can truly begin. One of the most recent lives lost too soon was an 18-year-old man.

The 18-year-old was a backseat passenger in a vehicle traveling in the left lane on the southbound side of the New Jersey Turnpike. Four people were in the car, and three of them shared the same last name. At some point, the driver lost control of the car.

The car veered across both lanes of traffic to the right shoulder where it then went off the road. The car then careened over a grass embankment, slammed into a utility pole and crashed through a fence. The car finally came to a rest after hitting four cars parked in a parking lot.

The driver suffered injuries for which he was treated and released at a local hospital. The front seat passenger, a 14-year-old boy, remained hospitalized in stable condition at last report. The passengers in the backseat were thrown out of the vehicle during the crash. Emergency medical personnel had both of them flown from the scene due to the severity of their injuries. The 19-year-old backseat passenger was last reported as being in critical condition, and the 18-year-old did not survive his injuries.

The family of the 18-year-old may file a wrongful death claim against the driver to seek restitution for the unforeseen expenses and other damages it has sustained, and may still sustain, because of his premature death. Not only will the family be responsible for this burial, but also for the medical expenses connected with the car accident. If negligence on the part of the driver is proved, the family may receive an award of damages typically seen in New Jersey car accidents, which may help them through the financial difficulties this tragedy brought them.
