Family recently lost a loved one to dangerous intersection

Some intersections in New Jersey see a higher number of crashes than others. Often, the construction of the intersection is part of the issue. A family recently lost a loved one at a Morris County intersection that one official says needs improvement.

Local officials are said to be working with the New Jersey Department of Transportation to make the intersection safer. In fact, the DOT assisted in the investigation of the recent accident that killed the family's 17-year-old son. The teen was a passenger in a car driven by a 17-year-old girl.

As they approached the dangerous intersection, the driver attempted to turn left off Route 46. Unfortunately, the vehicle turned into the path of another vehicle. The driver of that vehicle was unable to avoid slamming into the teen's car.

Both drivers suffered injuries that were not considered to be life threatening, and they were released from the hospital after assessment and treatment. The passenger in the girl's car, however, was seriously injured. Hospital personnel attempted to save his life, but his injuries were too severe, and caused his death. At last report, charges had not been filed against either driver, and officials do not believe impairment was a factor in the crash.

This may give little solace, however, to the family that lost a loved one in this accident. The family retains the right to file a wrongful death claim against all parties believed to have negligently caused or contributed to his premature death, which could include the drivers, the owners of the vehicles involved and government agencies responsible for the construction and upkeep of the intersection. The court could order a judgment for monetary restitution upon proper proof of negligence.
