Not always easy to determine how New Jersey car accidents occur

Law enforcement officials in New Jersey are often faced with situations where they are not readily able to determine how the situation occurred. Investigators trained to sift through evidence, witness statements and typically other information are brought in to solve the mystery. This applies to car accidents in the same way it applies to any other incident.

It may take some time for investigators to determine what happened in a recent head-on collision. So far, all that is known is that a southbound vehicle occupied by two women slammed head-on into a vehicle heading north carrying three men. The impact killed the three men in the northbound vehicle.

The two women survived the crash, but required medical attention for which they were taken to University Hospital in Newark. No further information on their conditions was available other than to say that their injuries were not considered life-threatening. No other vehicles were directly involved in the crash, but a New Jersey Transit bus was forced to stop suddenly. Some passengers suffered minor injuries when that happened.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has tasked members of its Vehicular Homicide Unit with determining the cause of the accident. The results of the unit's investigation will most likely determine whether any charges will be filed. Meanwhile, the families of the three men killed in this crash retain the right to file wrongful death claims against the driver of the other vehicle. If their claims are litigated successfully by proving negligence on the part of the other driver, the court may award damages typically seen in fatal car accidents.
