Car accidents caused by drunk drivers continue to take lives

Regardless of the number of police patrols, public awareness campaigns and laws, many New Jersey drivers still get behind the wheel of a car after drinking. The car accidents caused by these drivers often result in serious injuries and death. Police believe that alcohol may have been the cause of a recent single car crash that took the life of one person and injured three others.

The vehicle, occupied by the driver and several passengers, was headed north on the New Jersey Turnpike. The driver somehow lost control of the vehicle, which then slammed into a concrete barrier. One of the passengers, a man, was thrown out of the vehicle and killed. Another passenger suffered a serious injury to his neck. Two women also suffered injuries, but the nature of those injuries was not reported.

The current conditions of the injured passengers were also not reported. Authorities did not release whether the driver suffered any injures. However, the woman, who police suspect was under the influence at the time of the accident, faces a charge of drunk driving. As time goes on, it is possible that more charges could be added.

Meanwhile, the family of the deceased man and the injured passengers may file civil actions in connection with the accident. If negligence is proven to the court, the parties may be awarded damages consistent with those ordinarily awarded in car accidents. Any monetary restitution received could help the victims and the family of the deceased passenger with the costs and other damages incurred as a result of the accident.
