Car accidents on icy roads claims corrections officer

Automotive travel poses a range of hazards, a reality that all drivers understand and accept. Whenever we drive to meet friends or visit family, commute to work or school, or simply carry out weekly errands, we are placing ourselves at risk of harm. In most cases, that risk is minimal, and we return to our homes and loved ones. For one family, a fatal crash brought the dangers of car accidents into sobering focus.

A corrections officer died on Route 78 in Springfield, New Jersey on a recent Sunday afternoon. The 50-year-old man was on his way to work when the accident took place. The roads were icy and extremely slippery at the time of the incident. Upon early investigation, police believe that a Toyota Sienna crashed into the back of the corrections officer's Toyota Corolla and sent the corrections officer's vehicle into a snowbank.

The corrections officer was on his way to his 2 p.m. shift at the time of the crash, and the nature of his job did not allow for delays or absence due to adverse weather conditions. He had worked for the Northern State Prison in New Jersey for approximately 25 years and was thought very highly of by his colleagues. As a result of the crash, he sustained fatal injuries. The driver of the Toyota Sienna only sustained minor back injuries.

Victims of car accidents are fully entitled to claim compensation from the driver who caused the crash. Moreover, it is often possible to obtain financial compensation from a negligent driver's car accident insurance company. When an accident results in death, the family of the victim can move forward with a claim for wrongful death against the driver and any separate owner of the vehicle he was operating at the time of the car accident.
